Thalamic Abscesses

Yusuf Hermawan*, Wihasto Suryaningtyas**

Brain abscesses occur infrequently but continue to be problematic for the medical community. The incidence of brain abscesses in children has not changed much, although individual reports may show an increase or decrease in the number of reported cases depending on the patient population studied. Early diagnosis combined with the provision of the initiation of empiric antimicrobial therapy and surgical intervention broad-spectrum is an important component in the care and treatment of children with brain abscess. Thalamic abscess is very rare. The incidence varies from 1.3 - 6% of all incidence of brain abscess. A boy aged 6 years with complaints of seizure, with a history of fever, headache, and the presence of dental caries. On physical examination found no signs of increased intracranial pressure. From CT scan of the head with and without contrast shows a brain abscess in the left thalamus. Patient was giving medical treatment with the combination of empirical antibiotic and surgical treatment with burr-hole aspiration method.
